LICE and Blessings for Children!
Thankfully, we do not have lice at the #10 2nd Street house where our Blessings for Children mission outreach serves, but we do have lice treatment kits, and they are one of the reasons our ministry began.
Three years ago, at another local non-profit, a mother came in for food, and when she was asked if she had any other needs, she shared that two of her children had lice and would not be able to go back to school until they had been treated and she could not afford the treatment. As a food bank, we could not help with that request, and I could not find another agency that offered lice treatment help, so our SUMC Blessings for Children began, in part, to make sure children dealing with lice would have help if they needed it!
We haven’t had a huge number of cases over the almost three years we have been open, but we have had a run-on request for the kits in the past few weeks. And while It is not an inexpensive treatment, with our church family’s gracious financial support, we have been able to stock the lice treatment kits to be ready with a “yes” if that need arises in any of the families we serve. Thank you for helping to meet an important need you may not have even known.
If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:
New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.

If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:
- Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance.
- Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.
- Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
- A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.
New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.
