Church Council Recap February 2020

Have you ever wondered what happened at a church council meeting? We had our first council meeting for 2020, and here's your recap so you can be in the know. If you have questions, you can always request a copy of the official minutes from the church office.

Jeff McInnis - Church Council Chair

Our new council chair started the meeting off by welcoming everyone and sharing the vision for this year. Jeff's goal is to help everyone be more effective with their time resulting in more effective ministry. He stated this in the context of the Church Council's purpose:
The Church Council shall provide for planning and implementing a program of nurture, outreach, witness, and resources in the local church. It shall also provide for the administration of its organization and temporal life. It shall envision, plan, implement, and annually evaluate the mission and ministry of the church. The Church Council shall be amendable to and function as the administrative agency of the Charge Conference. –UM BOOK OF DISCIPLINE ¶ 252.1

Jeff asked for people to start by taking any requests directly to the appropriate team, committee, or Scott Newbold (Church Administrator) first so that we can adequately follow our structure.

Pastor Philip - Lead Pastor

Pastor Philip got up and shared a few words to start the year. He thanked everyone for his or her willingness to serve. He's excited to see the fruit from everyone's work this year. Philip also shared that we are focusing on communication, which was one of the primary concerns shared by the church in October. He has taken action to make this happen by changing my title to Communication Pastor. Evangelism and discipleship are also primary focuses for us as a church in 2020. Philip will be doing his part by asking 12 people, to form 12 groups, for 12 weeks (equaling 144 people). April 26, Pastor Philip will be holding an information session to prepare everyone for the upcoming General Conference and answer any questions people may have. He will also schedule one after the conference is over. He also encourages everyone to watch the lay testimonies from the 21 days of worship.

David Mobley - Finance Chair

David shared a word with the congregation a few weeks ago. He's so glad to be working with a great group on Finance this year. It's a big task, but they feel equipped for it. 2019 ended better than expected. They plan to watch things closely this year when it comes to the budget and spending. Their goal is to be at a place so that finances don't keep us from taking the steps God wants us to take as a church.

Angie Turnbow - Lay Leader

Angie is excited to be serving as our new lay leader. She moved to Shalimar and joined our church in 2019. She introduced the PLACE program, which helps new and long-time members of the church find their place in ministry. More will be coming out about this program soon.

Staff & Pastor Comments

Pastor Brad shared that the Board of Ordination voted to ordain him in June. He is thankful for all the support he has received over the past 7 1/2 years through his doctorate and now ordination journey.

Karen Jadin shared how proud she is to work with such an excellent support staff. Specifically, she wanted to thank David and Joe for their incredible work over the past two months. They went over and beyond for the Preschool and with a smile.
